Isle of Jura distillery was built in 1963 although a previous distillery built in 1810 was on the same site up until 1901. The distillery is very close to Islay, and sources its malt from Port Ellen maltings. However, most of the whisky distilled on Isle of Jura is a softer and largely unpeated style, with a small proportion of highly peated whisky being made occasionally. The distillery was expanded from 2 to 4 stills in 1978 and is currently owned by United Spirits (Vijay Mallya). Production capacity is 2,200,000L of alcohol per year.
